In the eighth round of the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024, India's D Gukesh and China's Ding Liren played out a hard-fought draw, keeping the score level at 4-4. This was the fifth consecutive draw between the two, with neither player able to gain an upper hand. Gukesh, starting with an English Opening, made some aggressive moves that pushed Ding back early in the game. However, Ding regained his footing, managing to balance the time advantage and equalize the position. Ding then captures one of Gukesh’s pawns that had been threatening to advance, taking it on a5. In response, Gukesh protects his other pawn under threat, moving it to b3.
