Despite having included the batter Jason Roy on a 15-man provisional list last month, England replaced the opener with Harry Brook in its Cricket World Cup roster on Sunday.

Roy has appeared in more one-day internationals than any other England player since the 2019 title, which he helped seal with a pick-up and throw for a run-out against New Zealand.

However, Roy's selection for the physically demanding Oct 5-Nov 19 event in India was clouded by a back ailment that prompted him to miss a four-match series against the Kiwis earlier this month.

Brook, a flexible batsman who can open or bat lower down, was a surprise omission from the provisional team after shining against Australia in the Ashes test series last summer in England. However, he struggled in the one-day international series against New Zealand, scoring 37 runs in three innings.

“The strength of the group has meant that we have had to make some tough decisions on world-class players,” England selector Luke Wright said.
