IPL Teams and Squads 2024

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 teams and squads: Now boasting of 10 teams, the IPL began in 2008 with 8 franchises. Much has changed since then but the original 8 cities in which these franchises were based are still in action with some of them having changed their names and one changing its owner.

The original eight: Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Delhi Capitals (DC) earlier Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Mumbai Indians (MI), Punjab Kings (PBKS) earlier Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals (RR), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) which replaced Deccan Chargers in 2011.

From 2022 onwards two more teams were added: Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to take the total number of teams in the IPL to 10.

Earlier in 2010 also the IPL was expanded to 10 teams with Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala being the two new additions. However, things did not work out and Kochi Tuskers were out of the league within a year while the Pune Warriors team played till 2013 before getting disbanded.

In 2016 and 2017, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were banned from participating and in their place two new franchises Rising Pune Super Giants and Gujarat Lions were added. When the two original franchises returned in 2018, the two replacements had to make way. Rajasthan Royals were the inaugural IPL Champions but have never won the trophy since. Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the two most successful teams in the competition with five trophies each. Kolkata Knight Riders with two trophies are the second most successful franchise. Deccan Chargers, SunRisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans are the three other winners of the tournament.

For this season, the biggest news was Hardik Pandya getting traded from Gujarat Titans, a team with which he had won a trophy in their debut season and finished runners-up in the second to Mumbai Indians for which he made his bow as a largely unknown player. The Australian duo of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins broke the bank at the 2024 auction with the left-arm pacer going for INR 24.75 crore to Kolkata Knight Riders and the 2023 World Cup-winning captain going for INR 20.5 crore to SunRisers Hyderabad. The highest-paid Indian player at the auction was Harshal Patel, who was sold for INR 11.8 crore to Punjab Kings.
