SRMIST: Honing Skills For A Bright Future

What was founded in 1985 as SRM Engineering College is today a top-notch private university named SRM Institute of Science & Technology, operating from three locations in Chennai and one in Delhi-NCR. The faculties are Engineering and Technology, Medical and Health Science, Management, Science and Humanities, Law and Agriculture.

Prof Borquez said learning is a process with no end; to succeed in life, one must be a constant learner. Perfection comes to those who are always searching for knowledge, he said. Speaking about medical education, he said it is a matter of great pride to get the opportunity to study medicine.It puts you on track to a life where your main objective is saving people’s lives.

The study of medicine would be incomplete if it were sans the element of humanity. Adherence to ethics, inculcation of tolerance, and imbibing perseverance are among the essential elements that make medical practitioners good healers.

Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, secretary to the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, and Dr P. Veeramuthuvel, Project Director of Chandrayaan - 3, ISRO (Bengaluru), were presented Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) by Dr T.R. Paarivendhar, Founder Chancellor of SRMIST. The honorary doctorates were presented to recognise their contribution to their respective fields. Dr Veeramuthuvel said failures should not prevent students from treading the path of success.

Success does not come easy; it takes much hard work. Citing the example of the success of Chandrayaan 3, he said many tests had to be done on Moon Lander before the mission was launched. A big team of scientists conducted various experiments to ensure that things were okay with Moon Lander. An artificial environment similar to the moon had to be constructed in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh to conduct various tests.

Success was witnessed after a great deal of hard work, said Dr Veeramuthuvel. He said never be afraid of failures; try to reach your goals with determination.

Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha said education is power and a way to transform oneself. Learning is not merely mastering facts and figures; it is much beyond that. It is a tool to enrich ourselves and make our lives better.

Dr P Sathyanarayanan, Pro-Chancellor (Academics) at SRMIST, said curiosity and analysis are essential in life. Curiosity motivates one to learn more things; analysis provides the required knowledge. These two elements subsequently result in various innovations, he said.

Among those present were Dr Prof. C Muthamizhchelvan, Vice-Chancellor of SRMIST; Dr S. Ronnusamy, the Registrar; Lt Col Dr A. Ravikumar (retired), the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Medical); Dr R Shivakumar, the Chairman of SRMIST (Trichy and Ramapuram Campus); and Harini Ravi, Correspondent of SRM Arts and Science College.

As the glittering ceremony wound up and the graduates left to face the world, memories flashed through their minds.

Why had they picked SRMIST in the first place?

SRM has eight faculties: Engineering & Technology, Medicine & Health Sciences, Management, Science and Humanities, Law, Agricultural Sciences, Distance Education and Online Education.

Were they ready for the rigours of the research world?

Yes. SRMIST has a clutch of ten research laboratories and facilities, which open up a new world for students. They are IIISM, REACH, NRC, CACR, SRM DBT Platform, Medical Research Center, Center For Statistics, Earthquake Research Cell, HPCC and SCIF. Dig into some mysterious acronyms, and things become crystal clear. So NRC is the Nanotechnology Research Centre, SCIF is the SCM Central Instrumentation Facility, and HPCC is the High-Performance Computing Centre.

Lastly, the students realised they would miss SRMIST exciting campus life the most. There is Astrophilia, a club devoted to studying the stars, constellations, planets, and galaxies, allowing amateur astronomists and physics enthusiasts to learn more about the vast and enigmatic universe.A gaming club teaches, promotes, and organises e-games and e-gaming tournaments. There are clubs for fashion, movies and dramatics, sports and so on—15 clubs, including a Rotaract Club that inculcates philanthropic values and gets students involved with the surrounding communities.

Best part is the alumni association

Basking in its success, SRMIST has a directorate specifically to handle relations with alumni, who are its “ambassadors and torch-bearers”. The Alumni Association has 94,188 registered members and counting, making it possibly unique among Indian universities.The Alumni Association’s vision is to “develop a fully connected, strong SRM alumni community.” The association’s mission is to encourage student-alumni interactions. That is something heaven-sent. After all, what could be more convenient and better for placements of fresh graduates?
