How a dedicated effort helped revive 150-year-old Lahaina's iconic Banyan tree

In August, as wildfires swept through Maui, the historic town of Lahaina witnessed devastating destruction. Among the casualties was the town's famous Banyan tree, which stood charred and seemingly lifeless. However, a glimmer of hope has emerged as fresh green leaves have begun to sprout amidst the scorched branches.

On September 13, the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) shared a video showing this remarkable sign of rejuvenation. Just last month, the department had expressed doubts about the 150-year-old tree's chances of survival.

In the aftermath of the fires, a dedicated effort followed. Teams of arborists, landscapers, and volunteers tirelessly poured hundreds of gallons of water onto the tree at regular intervals. This extra care and attention, led by landscape contractor Chris Imonti, have finally borne fruit, breathing new life into the Banyan tree.

Imonti in a statement said ?that they had conducted root samples the previous week and reported very positive news regarding new life in the roots. They mentioned that there were numerous new roots shooting off.
A gathering known as banyan tree hui – or conference – convened informally under the guidance of arborist Steve Nimz, who employed sensors to monitor the tree's growth rate, according to Imonti.

In addition, they employed "compost tea," a blend of natural components created by Imonti, which was injected into both the soil and the tree. As an experimental measure, alfalfa, a blossoming leguminous plant, was strategically positioned around the tree to assess whether its nutrients could aid in its restoration.

Lahaina, once the capital of Hawaii, has a wealth of historic structures. In 1873, Sheriff William Owen Smith planted a majestic 60-foot banyan tree to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the inaugural Protestant mission in this town, adding another layer to Lahaina's storied past.

This towering tree has transformed into a popular tourist destination where numerous celebrations and even proposals have taken place.?

Last week, Hawaii Governor Josh Green reported that the tragic wildfires claimed the lives of at least 97 individuals, with 74 of them having been positively identified. Additionally, 31 people remain unaccounted for.

Governor Green has encouraged travelers to visit West Maui when it reopens in October.
