6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Canada's Vancouver Island

An earthquake of magnitude 6.5 struck Canada's Vancouver Island on Thursday. As per the United States Geological Survey, the quake struck near Tofino on Vancouver Island.

As per the National Seismological Centre in India, the earthquake was of magnitude 6.3.

"EQ of M: 6.3, On: 11/07/2024 20:38:48 IST, Lat: 48.86 N, Long: 128.83 W, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Vancouver Island, Canada," read an official statement issued by the centre.

As of now, no tsunami warning for Vancouver Island or British Columbia have been issued. More details are awaited.

Last week, Vancouver Island was struck by five back to back earthquakes, triggering a tsunami warning for the Canadian island. However, after assessment from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the threat of a tsunami was called off.

As per the United States Geological Survey, the first 4.4-magnitude quake struck at 12:59 PM, near Tofino. 19 minutes later, another earthquake was recorded at 4.7-magnitude on the Richter scale.

Another earthquake of 4.5-magnitude was recorded in the area around 1:21 p.m., followed by a 4.3-magnitude earthquake at 1:23 p.m.. The fifth quake struck near Tofino and was recorded to be a 4.0 in magnitude jolt.
