In Quest Of A Secure Future

Question 1: You recently hosted India's first conference on Futures Literacy, what was the thinking behind that?

We find ourselves amidst a rapid era of transformation, where the convergence of climate change and advancements in artificial intelligence poses both challenges and prospects for the younger generation. In one possible outcome, our present way of life might undergo a profound shift, casting the future into uncertainty. Yet, within this uncertainty lies the opportunity to liberate our imagination, redefine norms, and question the established order. It's a chance to discard what appears inevitable and envision a novel & fairer future.

The decision to organize the conference stemmed from the recognition that this concept, although highly pertinent, is still in its early stages of development in India. Our goal was to convene a diverse group of stakeholders, fostering dialogue and embracing a range of perspectives.

Through our extensive work spanning over three states and 36 districts, engaging with more than 500 young individuals, we gathered responses that revealed a shift from feelings of anxiety about the future to innovative ideation of transformative pathways and a vision of a radically different world.

Question 2: Futures Literacy is a new phrase, what does it mean? What is the etymology?

Foresight and futures work originated in nation-states, the military, and decision-making bodies, primarily employed for planning and preparedness. The introduction of Futures Literacy for young people aimed to democratize this process, asserting that everyone possesses the capacity to anticipate, shape and determine their futures. The phrase ‘Futures Literacy’ was coined by UNESCO, which defines it as a capability that enables individuals to comprehend the role of the future in shaping their perceptions and actions.

Question 3: Why is Future Literacy important for today's world? How will it benefit the youth?

The world that the youth are poised to inherit is inherently unpredictable, marked by persistent issues such as poverty, inequality, an impending climate crisis, and rapid technological advancements. It is not sufficient to equip young people with the ability to merely respond to or problem-solve within this existing world; instead, there is a need to empower them to bring about radical change and shift the prevailing status quo.

In this pursuit, Futures Literacy plays a crucial role. It not only acknowledges the imperfections of the current state of affairs but also injects a politics of hope into the discourse. By expanding one's imagination, it fosters the birth of alternatives and instils the motivation to transform these alternatives into reality.

Question 4: What work is happening in this space around the world?

Since 2012, UNESCO has been leading over 110 Futures Literacy Laboratories (FLL) across 44 countries. Notably, the Prime Minister's office in Bangladesh took a proactive step by commissioning a series of futures workshops to collaboratively shape the preferred futures of education in Bangladesh. Globally, the Teach the Future movement, a non-profit organization, advocates for futures literacy as an essential life skill for both students and educators. Moreover, the United Nations Common Agenda 2030, an action plan for advancing sustainable development goals, recognizes futures literacy and foresight as key levers for enhancing long-term decision-making within the United Nations framework.

In the past year, Quest Alliance has held Futures Literacy workshops for learners to actively involve and empower the participants in shaping their own understanding and visions of the future.

Question 5: Tell us about Quest Alliance and its activities. How are you trying to bring change?

Quest Alliance operates within the education and skilling ecosystem, dedicated to equipping young individuals with 21st-century skills through self-directed learning. Our mission involves designing scalable solutions that empower educators to address crucial gaps in delivering quality education and skills training. By fostering learning networks and collaboration, we aim to drive systemic change fuelled by ongoing research and innovation. Our primary focus is on empowering youth for a successful transition from school to the workforce. Through meticulously designed programs, we provide young people with relevant skills and training to enhance their employability.
