This award validates the organisation's belief that its unique vision is making a positive difference in society, and it serves as a reminder that the press and business community also acknowledge the impactful work of Akhand Jyoti in eliminating curable blindness in low-income areas.?

Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital is committed to addressing curable blindness and providing free cataract surgeries through blindness elimination programme, driven by rural girls trained by the hospital as professionally qualified optometrists. The organisation's extensive outreach efforts, enables it to conduct over 5,000 eye-screening camps in remote locations, interior villages, and rural areas of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. These camps are facilitated by dedicated outreach teams and a fleet of refractive vans. Through these camps, the hospital is able to screen around 700,000 patients, including those in village schools, and Anganwadi centres, as well as its 5 hospitals and 33 vision centres. This extensive screening helps identify individuals in need of sight-restoring surgeries, and Akhand Jyoti performs over 90,000 such surgeries annually, with 80% of them being provided free of cost to underprivileged patients.?

Another notable initiative by Akhand Jyoti is its rural girls education, skilling, employment, and empowerment initiative under the 'Football to Eyeball' programme. Under this programme, the hospital identifies rural underprivileged girls who have completed their 10th standard examination. These girls are then enrolled in a 6-year full-time residential intervention. For the first 2 years, they undergo confidence-building training through playing football. This not only helps break gender biases but also empowers them. During this period, the girls also receive rigorous academic tutoring in subjects like English, Maths, and Science. After completing their 12th standard examination, they have the opportunity to pursue a 4-year degree course in Optometry through the renowned Aryabhatta Knowledge University. The girls spend the next 4 years at Akhand Jyoti, becoming professionally qualified optometrists.?

In addition to education, the girls gain practical experience by interning at Akhand Jyoti's base hospital in the village of Mastichak, Bihar. They learn from visiting faculties, experienced in-house doctors, and dedicated teachers. This unique programme guarantees 100% employment upon completion, with many girls continuing to play football even after becoming optometrists. Some even pursue higher studies, such as Masters in Optometry, BBA, and MBA. The programme aims to not only create confident, empowered, and independent women but also social change agents who can inspire others and address social evils.?

Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital faces challenges in reaching and identifying individuals in need of free cataract surgeries in rural areas. The organisation tackles this by deploying an extensive outreach programme. The outreach teams meticulously comb remote regions where access to basic facilities is limited. Prior to conducting eye screening camps, promotion is done through leaflet distribution, public announcements, and door-to-door visits within a designated area. Patients identified for cataract surgery are then transported to the closest surgical centre, and after the operation, they are dropped back to their villages. The operated patients become brand ambassadors, spreading the positive news about Akhand Jyoti.?

To ensure maximum reach and impact, Akhand Jyoti collaborates with local communities and government organisations. The organisation actively engages with Primary Health Centres and other government bodies to create a broader societal impact. Akhand Jyoti's presence in its catchment areas, with a chain of hospitals and vision centers in remote locations, a team of dedicated outreach workers, and village-level volunteers, has earned the trust of the communities it serves. Additionally, the hospital conducts school screenings, focusing on children and identifying refractive errors at an early age, allowing timely intervention and ensuring better educational outcomes.?

Overall, Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital's initiatives and programmess are making a significant difference in addressing curable blindness and providing free cataract surgeries. Through their outreach efforts, 'Football to Eyeball' programme, and collaborations with local communities, the organisation is not only restoring sight but also empowering individuals and creating positive social change.?
