India on Friday advised its citizens residing in Niger to leave that country in view of widespread violence there.?“In light of the prevailing situation, Indian nationals whose presence is not essential are advised to leave the country as soon as possible,” Ministry for External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

Niger's military announced on July 26 that President Mohamed Bazoum has been ousted and the military has taken over the country. Bazoum was seized by the presidential guard and its head, General Abdourahamane Tiani, took over as head of state.?Some neighborhoods in the capital, Niamey are living in the dark with little access to electricity and there are frequent power cuts across the city.

Bagch stated that the government was closely monitoring the situation in Niger.

"In light of the prevailing situation, Indian nationals whose presence is not essential are advised to leave the country as soon as possible. They may bear in mind that airspace is currently closed. When departing through land border, utmost precautions may be taken to ensure safety and security. Those who may be planning travel to Niger in the coming days are also similarly advised to reconsider their travel plans until the situation normalizes..." he said while addressing a press conference.
